Is Metro 2039 open world?
No official Metro 2039 page calls the game an open world. 4A creative director Andriy Shevchenko has described a return to tunnels and to the intensity of closed spaces, after the wider journeys of Metro Exodus. Map size and whether a hub can be wandered freely are not published.
I looked for the words “open world” on the Deep Silver game page and did not find them. The sentence I do have is Shevchenko’s, reported with the reveal: going back to the tunnels and leaning into what makes Metro, Metro. That is a direction, not a square-kilometer figure. I am not upgrading it into “fully linear” either, because nobody official used that phrase.
Confirmed, and not confirmed
Exodus let Artyom travel between large areas by train. 2039’s marketing puts the player back under Moscow more often. Screenshots still show streets, a bridge, and a station market, so “only corridors” would be too strong. The honest label is: tighter and more enclosed than Exodus, structure otherwise unpublished.

Questions
Is Metro 2039 bigger than Exodus?
Not stated. The published comment points to denser closed spaces, which can mean smaller, not larger.
Will there be an open surface like the Volga?
Surface shots exist. An Exodus-style open level has not been confirmed.
Who is Andriy Shevchenko?
Creative director at 4A Games, quoted in the reveal coverage of the game’s structure.
