Metro 2039 is a sequel to Exodus

Metro 2039 is a sequel to Metro Exodus, not a remaster and not a spinoff with the same lead. Exodus shipped on 15 February 2019 with Artyom. 2039 is scheduled for 4 February 2027 with the Stranger. How the Exodus ending is picked up on screen has not been explained.

I put the two Steam platform rows next to each other. Exodus is listed for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it also shipped on PS4 and Xbox One. 2039’s Steam row is Windows only, with PS5 and Xbox Series announced beside it. Exodus includes Russian with full audio on Steam. 2039’s language list does not. Those are checkable differences. “Which game is better” is not, because one of them is not out.

Differences you can source

Level structure is the soft one. Exodus is the wide journey. 2039’s creative director described a return to tunnels and closed spaces. That is not a patch note with square kilometers attached.

Questions

Is Metro 2039 a direct sequel?

It is the next main game after Exodus. “Direct” in the sense of scene-by-scene continuity has not been storyboarded in public.

Should I replay Exodus first?

It helps. It is not a stated requirement. See play order.

Is 2039 a remake of Exodus?

No. New year, new protagonist, new release.
